It is believed that May's orders of the day were "Remember your Regiment, and follow your Officers"; a phrase which for a time became the motto of the Regiment. After the Mexican War, the Regiment moved west to secure newly acquired territories.

In the winter ofmembers of the Regiment participated in the Utah Expedition, a campaign forever immortalized in Don Stiver's artwork, "Never a Complaint". Elements of the Regiment remained active until the start of the Civil War. Following their recall to the east inthe Regiment was designated the 2d United States Cavalry Regiment and fought as part of the 1st Cavalry Division of the Army of the Potomac and participated in numerous Civil War campaigns and battles.

One of the most memorable actions was the Regimental charge of the Confederate lines led by Captain T. Rodenbough in June at Louisa Court House. Rodenbough was awarded the Medal of Honor for his outstanding valor during this brief but violent clash. Don Stiver's famous artwork, "Sergeant's Valor", vividly depicts Schmidt's heroic act.
